On 24 October 2017, the Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems (MCME) conducted a livelihood training activity entitled: Enhancement Training on Meat Processing at Household Levels in Barangay Limao, Calauan, Laguna. A total of 15 residents from Sitio Mahabang Parang of Bry. Limao participated the training. This is in partnership with the Philippine Geothermal Production Company Inc. (PGPC). The PGPC is actively providing services to its host communities as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR). They extended their CSR program into research projects in partnership with MCME-UPLB. The said project is part of the program entitled: An Indigenous Tree-Based Agroforestry Development Program in Mount Bulalo.
Dr. Roberto G. Visco, Director and Dr. Rogelio T. Andrada II, Deputy Director of MCME graced the activity and personally awarded the meat processing equipment that the community can use to start their own livelihood. Dr. Oliver D. Abanto, Associate Professor and Dr. Nenita L. De Castro, University Extension Specialist (UES) III of the Institute of Animal Science (IAS) demonstrated to the participants the procedure of how to make tocino and burger patty.
The participants were able to produced a total of 21 packs of tocino (250grams/pack) and 87 pieces of hamburger patties. The tocino costs at Php 60.00 per pack while the hamburger patty costs at Php 15.00 per piece or Php 65.00 per pack. The income generated from the meat products will serve as the community revolving capital. The activity is part of the livelihood capacity building programs of the Center.
